Homewood is a city in central Alabama with a population of just over 26,414 people based on the projection made by the World Population Review. The last US Census was made in 2020, where the statistics showed 25,377 as the last recorded Homewood, Alabama population. The city is located in Jefferson County and is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Homewood is a welcoming community where you can find a friendly face when taking a walk. 


Homewood, located just a few miles south of Birmingham, AL, has a population breakdown of 83.06% White, 11.18% African American or Black, 2.32% Asians, and 3.36% other racial composition.


In the early 1880s the first settlers arrived in Homewood, but it was not until 1920 that Homewood was incorporated. During next nine years from 1920 to 1929, Homewood expanded to include Rosedale, Edgewood, Grove Park, and Hollywood.


Homewood’s original school system was a part of Birmingham, but today Homewood has its own school system, which was created in 1970 when it broke away from the City of Birmingham. Today the Homewood City School System is make up of Shades Cahaba Elementary School, Edgewood Elementary School, Hall Kent Elementary School, Homewood Middle School, and Homewood High School. The city is also home to Samford University.


Today, the city is home to several small businesses, which give its downtown a local vibe. Downtown Homewood is a popular destination for tourists to stay while visiting Birmingham.
